If you are lucky enough to be in Washington DC tomorrow, August 15,or in the next few weeks, then you might pop into the Smithsonian'sNational Museum of American History. From 11 am to 4 pm on August 15, the museum will celebrate Julia's 100th birthday with a day long celebration and a birthday surprise. Visitors to the museum will be able to watch episodes of "The French Chef" in the Warner Bros Theater. Festivities will also include book signings by authors of books on Child.
In addition to the day's special events, it is worth noting that the museumwill beunveiling a sneak peek of Julia Child's Kitchen from August 15-September 3. The kitchen, which is lovely and had been installed in a stand-along exhibition, will now be permanently displayed andact asthe opening experienceto a forthcoming exhibit called, "FOOD: Transforming the American Table 1950-2000." The kitchen was donated to the museum by Julia Child in 2001 and contains the hundreds of tools, appliances, and furnishings arranged exactly as they were when Child donated them. The new exhibition space offers new and better views of the home kitchen.
I visited the museum and toured the kitchen a couple years ago. It is fascinating to see the kitchen, which is really quite basic and utilitarian. Clearly a culinary workhorse!
